What Katie Ate

Excerpts from the amazing Christmas edition of What Katie Ate

What Katie Ate is the blog put together by super talented Sydney food photographer and stylist Katie Quinn Davies. Her blog is about all things food and drink, with recipes and food photography by Katie herself plus "what's hot and tasty within the Sydney and Australian food scene". Cute! Each blog post is beautifully laid out, photographed and styled with mouth watering recipes to boot.

Her BUMPER Christmas post is a whopping 495 pages - it's a visual feast of photography, styling, typography and recipes ideas. Not just a Christmas read, I think inspiration for the year round. Inspired!

From Dexter to Missoni

Inspiration comes from the strangest of places sometimes. Just having a quiet night in catching up with my favourite serial killer Dexter, and in the background of a murder scene I saw a gloriously hideous kitch bath mat. You know that kind that is so kitch that it is cool? Well a quick google search later and I've just purchased a most ridiculously beautiful bathmat. I don't own a house - but I have a lovely bathmat!

Hollie & Harrie beach Sombrillas

It's great to see some local ladies doing their own thing - what's more designing a completely unique product. That's exactly what local girls Skye and Claire have done launching their business Hollie & Harrie just a few weeks ago. Being Mums themselves they saw a need for better sun protection that the kids actually wanted to be under "with five very active children between us, we adore the beach and outdoors but dread the sunburn. We are very 'sun smart' but find the existing beach tents on the market too stifling, provide no natural air flow and our children do not enjoy sitting in them" and so the Sombrilla was born, the girls have designed and manufactured the Sombrillas plus a sweet collection of gorgeous Sunshirts for littlies.

I for one love the yellow Sombrilla and have already ordered one - perfect for Al and his 4 cousins to play under this summer. They're really versatile and can be put in several positions providing more or less shade, they're lightweight and easy to put up. Now all we need is for the rain to stop and we can get to the beach and use ours!

Pop over to Hollie and Harrie for more details.

Fenton & Fenton

The Fenton & Fenton girls were having Christmas drinks tonight and I couldn't get there.... so seeing as I'm not there, now is as good as time as any to show off these photos that I recently did with photographer Tony Mott. Huge thanks to Lucy for letting us set up a mini studio in the middle of her store while she was open, pull apart the shop and build sets! It was well worth it.

I truly feel so lucky to be able to go in and work with the Fenton & Fenton stock it's a heady fusion of colour, texture, print, pattern and history.

The Millswyn

The Millswyn is one of the new kids on the Melbourne block (on the former Lynch's block no less) it's neo French in a Nordic setting. Sitting right opposite the Tan, it's light, joyful and evidently the work of Hecker Guthrie, HG say "it is a fresh, comfortable space where domestic references are rife and no doubt, a new institution is in the making". I'm already looking forward to the Superfood Salad on the terrace this summer.

Chair inspiration

I am loving this ‘Crested Comb Chair’ - which is a simplified version of the classic Windsor by Tim Liles.

The Ultimate House Book

Snap shot from Terence Conran's book The Ultimate House Book, an encyclopaedic guide to modern living. Apparently this is an image from his own home, I wish my shed was that beautiful and that organised.

Servery & Spoon

Well look who went and got a great cafe - East Malvern did! Continuing on in the welcomed trend of great cafes opening up in suburban areas, comes Servery and Spoon. It's a favourite of mine on a Friday morning, after I drop off my son I grab a rare solo coffee. Bliss.

Christmas Trees by Larritt-Evans

Exciting news - my hand-made Christmas trees are now for sale! Due to an overwhelming response I've decided to take orders, we can make to any size or scale. If you'd like to see one in the flesh, head to A Shop Called Moth where there is one in the window. I make them from old pieces of wood, so there's no cutting down trees this Christmas.

To place an order email me here at claire@larritt-evans.com. xx

Prahran apartment

I can finally share some final images from the apartment I have just finished (today!). It was a great project that saw me being able to source great vintage finds and also produce some of my own furniture - something I definitely want to do more of.
Entrance - customised bentwood chair with black socks.
Bedroom artwork by the lovely Rachel Castle.
So, so, so excited to have designed this coffee table and to see it come to life with the help of my team of timber guys. I am lucky to work with local craftsmen who share my focus simplicity, attention to detail who are also hell bent on using recycled materials.
Another shot the canary yellow coffee table - can't resist!
Old painters ladder with globe pendant.

Teruhiro Yanagiharra

It's no secret that I am a huge fan of working with concrete and wood. What I love about this execution by Japanese designer Teruhiro Yanagiharra is the simplicity of the design, the mix of materials, it's minimal yes, but still so warm and cosy.

Nice one dad

How amazing is this space ? Imagine shooting here....
My p's just got back from a trip to the states - they went road tripping from the west coast to the east coast. This was Dad's favourite moment of the trip - and I quote "We were wandering around the back streets of this lovely old town (best known as both a ski resort and an artists colony) when I spotted this old building. I took a few photos and the next minute, the son-in-law, of the original owner came out and asked if we would like to see inside.
For the next hour or so, we were given a personal tour by this lovely & gentle old man. Loved the old work shop, which is still in use today. Definitely one of the highlights of our 5 weeks in the States."

Dad and I share a love of a workshop - Oh the life of the grey nomads - love it!

FEED Projects

The FEED bags are not only practical, environomentally friendly and super cute - most importantly they help to reach hungry children through the sales of FEED bags. FEED bags raise money for World Food Programme school-feeding operations and awareness of the problem of child hunger world wide.

All FEED products are made as eco-friendly and fairly as possible, bags are produced with high-quality, 100% organic cotton and natural burlap, produced by audited and certified fair labor facilities.

These bags are available for purchase at Fenton and Fenton - great Xmas present idea I say - the gift that keeps on giving!

Monk Bodhi Dharma

Going to check out (not-so-new) cafe Monk Bodhi Dharma in the AM, great to have another cafe in my local area. They use Market Lane beans - so should be in for a treat.

Simple and sweet

Fan Ho

I just adore this photograph by Chinese photographer Fan Ho, it has such a sense of calm and quiet. I feel very lucky to be able to have Fan Ho's work in my collection over at One Thousand Words.

Fenton & Fenton

This is one of my favourite shots that I've done for the girls at Fenton & Fenton.

I am shooting Fenton & Fenton on Friday, I'm very much looking forward to styling their amazing store again. I've been sketching like a mad woman, must be cut throat and reduce the number of shots we take - we only have one day.
